Physical Health & Wellness
Your physical well-being can be impacted by your tumor and treatment. There are several therapy and medication options to help with these different side effects. Some of these therapy options will continue after treatment to continue working on remaining side effects from your tumor or treatment. Many treatment centers will have these therapy options onsite or can recommend you to a therapist near you.
Therapy Options
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy can help patients improve their walking, balance, and strength. Some patients may experience long-lasting or permanent mobility problems. Patients will perform a variety of exercises with a physical therapist and at home to improve.
Music Therapy
Music therapy was formally introduced into Western medicine in the 1950s and is a less common type of therapy. However, it can assist in managing side effects of diagnosis and treatment such as anxiety, nausea, stress, and depression.
Occupational Therapy
Patients may experience difficulty doing the day-to-day things they are used to such as work around the house, hobbies, or tasks related to their career or profession. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to improve a patient’s health and ability to physically function on a day-to-day basis.
Speech Therapy
Any type of brain tumor has the potential to affect cognitive abilities of the patient such as their ability to speak. According to an article published by American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Wire in 2012, around 30-50% of brain tumor patients will experience what is known as aphasia or “loss of ability to understand or express speech”.
