A Comprehensive Guide to the National Institute of Health

What is the NIH (National Institute of Health)?

Established in 1887, the NIH has been at the forefront of medical discovery for over a century. It is the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world, investing billions of dollars annually to support scientists and institutions across the nation and around the globe. Its mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and apply that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability.

The NIH’s Role in Advancing Health

The NIH supports a diverse array of research endeavors, spanning from basic science to clinical trials. Its funding fuels groundbreaking discoveries in genetics, neuroscience, infectious diseases, and many other fields. By fostering collaboration and innovation, the NIH accelerates the development of new therapies, diagnostics, and preventive measures.

Eligibility

– Patients may be referred by a physician or dentist in private practice, hospital, clinical, or other medical organization.

-The patient’s specific disease or condition must be under active investigation by NIH physicians at the time of admission.

-Each institute considers age, weight, sex, general health, and length of the waiting list for qualified patients as criteria for admission. The possibility of long-term inpatient stays and extended follow up is also considered. Apart from these medical considerations, there are no other restrictions based on race, creed, age, sex, or color.

-Patients must have a responsible understanding of their role in a research protocol.
